Getting married in the Achterhoek: which area do we mean?

Are you getting married in the Achterhoek in 2027? Then you are marrying in a rural region with plenty of space, castles and old farmhouses. That is wonderful for your photos. It also asks something of your wedding transport. In this article you can read which wedding venues there are, what the municipalities require for your own venue and what to look out for when you hire a wedding car in the Achterhoek. First, what exactly is the Achterhoek? Administratively, it means the eight municipalities of Regio Achterhoek: Aalten, Berkelland, Bronckhorst, Doetinchem, Montferland, Oost Gelre, Oude IJsselstreek and Winterswijk. That is what this article covers. Achterhoek Toerisme counts eleven municipalities, adding Doesburg, Lochem and Zutphen. That is a tourist definition.

How big is the area? According to CBS figures, on 1 January 2026 the eight municipalities had a combined 303,810 residents, across 1,217 km². We added up those totals ourselves from the CBS figures per municipality. Doetinchem is the largest municipality, with 60,466 residents. In Bronckhorst there are 127 people per km² of land, while the Dutch average is 539. In short: lots of villages, lots of space, and so often a fair distance to drive between home, ceremony and party.

Wedding venues in the Achterhoek: castles, churches and farms

If you are looking for a wedding venue in the Achterhoek, you have plenty of choice. A few examples, with what the venues say themselves:

• Kasteel Ruurlo is an official wedding venue of the municipality of Berkelland. According to More Ruurlo, the ceremony room holds a maximum of 80 guests. Guests park free of charge on the grounds and the station is less than a 10 minute walk away. Lovely photo spots include the forecourt, the water, the old trees and the bridges.
• Kasteel Huis Bergh in 's-Heerenberg (Montferland) lists several places for the ceremony. According to Kasteel Huis Bergh, these are the Kanselarij or the courtyard (each for a maximum of 35 guests) and the Habsburgerzaal (maximum 120 guests). The page Bereikbaarheid en route says that parking for visitors costs €4.00 per vehicle, with a 5 minute walk to the entrance. That page says nothing about wedding cars. So ask the venue where your wedding car may stop and wait.
• In Bronckhorst, the municipality of Bronckhorst names Kapel Bronkhorst, Kasteel Keppel in Laag-Keppel, Kasteel Vorden and the Keuken van Hackfort in Vorden, among others.
• In Aalten, the municipality of Aalten lists the Sint Joriskerk and 't Grachthuys in Bredevoort and Boerderij de Oude Linde, among others.
• In Winterswijk, according to the municipality of Winterswijk, you can choose from 17 designated venues outside the Raadhuis, such as the Jacobskerk and Landgoed Vriezenhuis in Woold. Landgoed Vriezenhuis describes itself as 400 years old, set among woods and fields, with free parking.
• In Berkelland, you can also marry at Havezathe de Kamp in Neede. According to the municipality of Berkelland, you may marry anywhere in the municipality, as long as the place lies within its boundaries and is accessible to people with limited mobility. Outdoor weddings are allowed there too.

At the municipality of Montferland, besides Huis Bergh the list includes the town hall in Didam and Het Montferland. For a venue of your own choice, you apply in writing to the mayor and aldermen.

Your own wedding venue? Every municipality has a different deadline

Do you want to marry in a barn, a garden or at a family home? Then you apply for that location through the municipality. The deadlines vary considerably:

Municipality	Application for own or one-off venue
Oude IJsselstreek	at least 4 months in advance
Oost Gelre	allow 4 months, as long as the application can take
Bronckhorst	allow 3 months (regulations: 8 weeks)
Winterswijk	at least 13 weeks in advance, with a floor plan
Doetinchem	no separate application if the venue meets the rules, otherwise at least 6 weeks in advance and at extra cost

What the table does not tell you:

• Oude IJsselstreek. According to the municipality of Oude IJsselstreek, there are fixed venues, such as the Oude Ettense Kerk and Het Hofshuus in Varsseveld. For your own venue you need the owner's permission, and the owner almost always charges costs on top of the municipal fees. This is stated on the page Eigen trouwlocatie.
• Oost Gelre. At the municipality of Oost Gelre, you sign an agreement with the owner that indemnifies the municipality against problems, including those with accessibility and parking.
• Bronckhorst. The municipality's website says 3 months, while the 2026 civil registry regulations say eight weeks at the latest. With 3 months you are always on the safe side.
• Doetinchem. At the municipality of Doetinchem, a permit may be needed for more than 150 people, except in hospitality venues.

What the rules mean for your wedding transport in the Achterhoek

The rules are about the venue, but they affect your wedding car too. Three points:

1. Arrange parking together with the venue. The Bronckhorst regulations require enough parking near the wedding venue. In Oost Gelre, the agreement with the owner indemnifies the municipality, including against parking problems. So parking is a matter for you and the owner. That is why you should also agree where the wedding car will stand, preferably close to the entrance.
2. No ceremony in the car. In Doetinchem, the ceremony may not take place in a moving vehicle. So saying "I do" during the drive is not possible there. Arriving by car is of course fine.
3. Watch the times. In Oost Gelre, you marry at a venue from Monday to Friday between 9am and 4pm, and on Saturday between 10am and 4pm. Plan your wedding car's journey around that, leaving room for photos.

Marrying outdoors? Winterswijk and Oost Gelre require an indoor option, and Doetinchem asks for an alternative at a weather-dependent venue. Discuss with your rental company what happens if it rains, especially with an open-top car.

Distances, driveways and gravel tracks

In a rural region, the difference is often in the kilometres. Setting off from Aalten, marrying in Vorden and having the party in 's-Heerenberg? Then you quickly cover a good distance. So put all the addresses in the right order in your request. Ask how many free kilometres are included and what each extra kilometre costs. Ask about the last few metres too. Many castles and country estates have a long driveway, a gravel track or a narrow bridge. Not every car copes with those equally well. A low sports car or a long limousine can struggle on a bumpy track. A classic car suits a castle beautifully, but ask the rental company whether the car can manage that road. Ask the venue whether the car may drive right up to the door.
