Austin was a British car brand that for decades had a firm place on British streets. The best-known Austin of all is probably not a passenger car but a taxi: the FX4, the black cab that drove around London from the late 1950s until well into the 1990s. Anyone who sees one immediately thinks of Big Ben, red buses and rain on the pavement. That recognisable image makes the FX4 an original wedding car for couples who want something different from a sports car or a limousine.
The great thing about a taxi as a wedding car is that it was built for passengers. The driver sits at the front, separated from the passenger compartment, and the space in the back is generous. You step in just as you would in London: into the back, upright and without having to stoop.
The FX4 was designed as a workhorse, not a luxury car. It is precisely this practical design that makes it so pleasant on a wedding day: everything revolves around the passengers in the back, and on this day that is you.
The FX4 is built tall, with a flat floor in the back and wide doors. For a bride with a big dress or a long train, that is a real advantage: you can get in standing up, and the dress does not have to be squeezed into a narrow footwell. A top hat or an upswept hairstyle will also arrive intact. You can read more about the model on the page about the Austin FX4 as a wedding car.
Several passengers fit in the back. That means the FX4 can take the couple together with witnesses or bridesmaids, which is handy if you only want one car. Ask the rental company how the seats are arranged exactly; in taxis of this type there are often folding seats as well as the bench seat.
London taxis were required by the regulations to have a very small turning circle. This means an FX4 can turn around in narrow streets and works very well in a historic town centre, where larger classic cars sometimes get stuck. Parking right at the door is often difficult in an old town centre, so always agree on a drop-off point.
The FX4 is a simple, sturdy car, but it is still a classic. It is not fast and the suspension is firm. Choose a route with quiet roads and allow a few extra minutes in the schedule between the ceremony, the photo location and the reception. Air conditioning is generally not fitted; on warm days, open windows and a short journey help.
A London taxi suits a British-themed wedding very well, as well as a city wedding with photos in the streets and on bridges, and couples who want to make their guests smile. If you would like to compare more British classics, you will find them under English wedding cars, including Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Mini. The classic wedding cars page also lists cars with the same feel.
A taxi is rewarding to decorate: the bonnet is wide and the ribbon runs beautifully from the grille to the windscreen. A sign behind the rear window or a flower arrangement on the roof also works well. Agree with the rental company what is allowed and who will put the decorations on. A classic black cab with white ribbons is a striking sight; if the car has been painted a different colour, match the flowers to it.
