Chevrolet is General Motors' biggest brand and has been building cars for a broad public since the early twentieth century: pick-ups, family cars and large saloons. Yet the best-known Chevrolet is a sports car. The Corvette came onto the market in 1953 and grew into America's answer to European sports cars. That makes it a recognisable choice for couples who want something sporty with an American character.
Where a Mustang often evokes nostalgia, the Corvette stands for speed and low, wide lines. On a wedding day a car like this stands out at once, especially in a bright colour with the roof down. At the same time, it is a modern car that simply starts, stays cool and can handle a long route.
The seventh generation of the Corvette was built from 2014 and brought back the Stingray name. It is the last Corvette with the engine at the front, under a long bonnet, before its successor moved the engine behind the seats. As well as the coupé, it is available as a convertible with a fabric roof. You can read more about the model on the page about the Chevrolet Corvette as a wedding car.
The Corvette is a two-seater with a low seat and a wide door opening. In a slim or short dress you simply step in; with a full skirt or train it takes a little more skill. Sit down first with your legs outside the car, then swivel in. In an open car, a long train can also rest over the edge of the door, as long as nobody closes the door on the fabric.
A Corvette of this generation has air conditioning, a good sound system and seats that stay comfortable even after a long drive. That makes it better suited to longer distances than a classic car. The roof opens and closes electrically, so a shower need not spoil the day.
The V8 sounds low and loud, which makes a big impression when you leave after the ceremony. At a church or a quiet venue, it is polite to start the engine only once the guests are outside. Agree with the rental company whether the car can be driven in a quieter mode.
An open Corvette suits a summer wedding at a beach pavilion, a modern villa or a party with an American theme. For photos, a long, empty road or a car park with a nice backdrop works well: the low silhouette looks its best when the photographer crouches a little lower.
Rental companies that offer sports cars often set conditions for self-drive, such as a minimum age and a number of years of holding a driving licence, and they ask for a deposit. Check this straight away when you request a quote. If you want to look further, you will find more eye-catching cars among the American wedding cars and more open models among the convertible wedding cars.
Keep the decoration on a Corvette small. The bonnet is long and slopes away at the front, so a large flower arrangement soon hangs crooked. A narrow ribbon from the grille to the windscreen or a bow on the boot lid looks neater and stays in place even at slightly higher speeds. Never use tape on the paintwork.
