The original Mini came onto the market in 1959 and was built until 2000, with hardly any change to its shape. The idea was a small car with as much interior space as possible: the engine mounted transversely at the front, the wheels pushed right out to the corners. The name Cooper refers to John Cooper, who developed sportier versions that brought the Mini success in rallying in the 1960s.
At a wedding, the Mini stands out because of its size. Where other wedding cars impress with their length or chrome, the Mini makes people smile. It suits a cheerful, relaxed celebration, a city wedding or a couple who love British style. In photos it looks great next to a large building, precisely because of the contrast.
As well as the standard closed Mini, you will also come across open versions as wedding cars. A Mini with a fabric roof is less common; many open Minis were converted later from a closed car. Ask the rental company how the roof works and how quickly it can be closed.
To be honest, you need to think about this carefully. The Mini is about three metres long and has two doors. Getting into the back means going through the front seat, and the space there is limited. With a slim dress it works fine, but with a full ball gown or a long train it will take some trial and error.
A Mini from this period has no power steering and no air conditioning. It steers directly and feels lively, but on the motorway it is loud and twitchy. So choose a route along country roads or through the city.
In a historic town centre with narrow streets, the Mini is especially handy: it can park in places where a large saloon cannot. It is also ideal for a short trip from the town hall to a photo location. Keep the decoration small: a bow on the grille and a few flowers on the boot lid are enough.
A Mini is also fun as a second car on the day. Some couples drive to the ceremony in a large classic and switch to the Mini for the photo shoot or the evening. At a small wedding venue or in a narrow lane, that makes for playful photos.
