Most people think of Italian sports cars with a trident on the grille when they hear the name Maserati. The Ghibli brings that character to a four-door saloon. The name is not new: Maserati likes to name its models after winds, and Ghibli is the name of a desert wind. In the 1960s a sporty coupé carried that name; the recent Ghibli is a four-door saloon that sits below the larger Quattroporte in the range.
The Ghibli has a long bonnet, a low, sloping roofline and the distinctive air vents in the front wings that you see on many Maseratis. It looks clearly sportier than an ordinary executive saloon, yet it remains stylish. That makes it suit a modern city wedding just as well as a dinner at a country estate. And then there is the sound of the engine, which the brand is famous for: when you arrive, everyone hears that you are here.
The big advantage over a coupé or roadster is the four doors. The bride can get in at the back without climbing over a front seat, and the dress can be spread out across the back seat. There is still room in the front for a witness or the photographer. For couples looking for a modern, comfortable car with more presence than an ordinary luxury car, that is a strong combination.
On the wedding day, a modern sports saloon calls for a few different arrangements than a classic car. These are the points that come up most often.
A sporty saloon sits lower than an SUV or a classic limousine. Sit down first and then swing your legs in, and ask someone to gather up the skirt and train. A dress with a very full skirt will fit, but needs to be folded carefully. If you are unsure, you can try getting in beforehand with the rental company.
A modern Maserati often has a dark or metallic paint finish on which every scratch shows. A ribbon from the grille to the windscreen or a small floral arrangement on the bonnet looks lovely, but leave the fitting to the rental company or agree beforehand how your florist will attach it. Never use tape on the paint.
Include the pick-up, ceremony and reception addresses in your request, plus any photo stops. A modern car has air conditioning and is unlikely to break down, so a somewhat longer drive or a detour past a beautiful spot is perfectly doable. Do allow a generous margin, though, because the schedule on a wedding day often runs a little late.
The Maserati page lists all the cars of the brand that rental companies currently offer. If you would rather drive with the roof down, the Maserati GranCabrio is the obvious sibling: a four-seater with a fabric roof and the same Italian presence, ideal for a sunny wedding day.
If you are torn between a Ghibli and another make, take a look at the luxury wedding cars. Modern sports saloons and classic English models appear side by side there, so you can quickly see which atmosphere best suits your day.
The Ghibli suits a couple looking for a contemporary, polished style: a ceremony in a modern town hall, a hotel or a sleekly renovated farmhouse. If you are after nostalgia with chrome and rounded shapes, a classic car is the more obvious choice.
