The Volkswagen Kever (Beetle) was designed in the 1930s under the leadership of Ferdinand Porsche and built in huge numbers after the war, in Germany until the end of the 1970s and in Mexico for much longer. The rounded shape, the air-cooled engine at the back and the unmistakable sound make it instantly recognisable to almost everyone.
As a wedding car, the Kever is cheerful and approachable. It brings back memories for guests of every age and suits a relaxed wedding: a party in a garden, on a farm, in a barn or on the beach. In photos its rounded shape gives a playful, warm look, especially in a pastel colour or white.
As a wedding car, the Kever Cabrio is particularly popular. It was built by the coachbuilder Karmann, but the closed version is hired out too. Volkswagen calls the closed Kever a Limousine, which in German simply means saloon. So it is not a stretched car, just the classic Kever with a fixed roof. The Cabrios from the 1970s often have a more curved windscreen than the older models.
Over the years the Kever was adjusted a little here and there. Older examples have smaller rear lights and a smaller rear window, while later ones got larger lights and heavier bumpers. This makes little difference in photos, but if you are looking for a particular style, it is worth paying attention to the year of manufacture.
The Kever has two doors and four seats. The bridal couple can sit in the front or in the back; getting into the back is done past the folded-forward front seat.
At the front the entry is fairly high, which is comfortable with a full skirt. In the Cabrio with the roof down, you can step in easily without ducking, and an updo is not bothered by the roof. In the closed Kever the roofline is rounded and low at the sides, so duck a little more when getting in. A long train can go on the back seat or in the footwell.
The Kever is simple and robust, but it is still an old car. There is no air conditioning, the heating is limited and the pace is relaxed. On a warm day the Cabrio is lovely to ride in with the roof open; in the closed version you can open the windows. Luggage goes at the front under the bonnet, because the engine is at the back.
Because of its size, the Kever is handy in a historic town centre and on narrow country roads. For photos, a colourful backdrop works well: a field of flowers, a row of trees or an old wall. Decoration such as a flower garland across the bonnet or a large ribbon at the back suits its rounded shapes nicely.
If you want to carry the style through, you can have your witnesses follow in a second Kever. Two round cars one behind the other make a cheerful picture in photos.
If you love air-cooled Volkswagens with more space, take a look at the T1 bus. All models from the brand can be found at the Volkswagen wedding cars, and if you are mainly looking for a classic, you will find more choice at the classic cars as wedding cars.
