Ask one person what a limousine is and they will picture an extremely stretched car with a bar inside. Ask another and they will describe a dignified saloon with a roomy back seat. Both are right. Originally, a limousine was a car with a separate, spacious rear compartment for the passengers, with the driver sitting up front. In German and in the car world, the word is also simply used for a closed four-door car. That is why the closed Volkswagen Beetle is officially called a Limousine too, as the counterpart of the convertible.
For a wedding, a limousine comes down to two things: space and presence. A bride in a full dress wants to be able to sit without crushing the train, and the couple want to step out calmly and elegantly on arrival.
Several kinds of car fall into this group on the site, from a classic English saloon to a cheerful people's car and a modern, fast five-seater. What they have in common is the space in the back and a closed, dignified shape.
A Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud is the classic image of a wedding limousine: long, stately and with a wide back seat. It is the choice for a formal wedding in a church, a castle or on a country estate, where the car can pull up at a calm, unhurried pace.
The Volkswagen Beetle in the closed Limousine version is more modest, but it has all the charm of the 1950s. If you are looking for more room for company, a classic Volkswagen T1 bus is a cheerful alternative with space for witnesses or family.
Modern cars with plenty of room in the back and a powerful look also belong in this group, such as a fast Audi with seating for five. These come with air conditioning, comfort and a quiet ride.
A limousine is also very much a car in which you can take a moment to unwind. After the ceremony, with all the congratulations and emotions, the ride to the reception is often the first moment you have to yourselves. A spacious, quiet back seat makes that moment even more special. Agree with the rental company whether there is time along the way for a short detour or a photo stop.
A limousine is long, and you notice that when parking and turning. In a historic town centre or on a narrow church square, it is wise to agree a fixed drop-off spot in advance. Also ask the wedding venue whether the driveway is suitable for a long car.
If you are looking for a true stretch limousine for a group, ask the rental companies what is possible. For the couple themselves, a spacious saloon is often more practical and easier to manoeuvre.
