GMC is the commercial vehicle brand of General Motors. The GMC 100 is a light pick-up from the generation that appeared straight after the Second World War and was built until the mid-1950s. It is the twin of the Chevrolet 3100: the same basis, with its own grille and its own details. The rounded wings, the broad nose and the cab with small windows make these pick-ups one of the most recognisable American classics.
As a wedding car, it is mainly these rounded pick-ups from the late 1940s and early 1950s that are in demand. The cab has room for two people. It is a car with an honest, rural look, which suits couples who want a wedding car with character rather than gloss.
The cab of a pick-up from this era has a single continuous bench seat for two people. The couple therefore sit side by side, which makes a lovely picture in photos taken through the windscreen. There is little room for a full skirt: the cab is narrow and the bench is upright. A softly falling dress fits best. With a wide skirt or train, it can help to gather the fabric on your lap or to keep the journey short.
A pick-up sits higher than an ordinary car. There is often a running board under the door, but getting in is still a big step. Ask someone to help, and consider wearing flat shoes for the journey.
These pick-ups were built simply, for work on the land and in town. There is no power steering and no air conditioning, the engine is basic and the pace is slow. Plan a route along quiet roads and take your time. Ask the rental company to explain starting and gear changes before you set off.
What makes a classic pick-up special as a wedding car is the load bed. It has room for flowers, straw bales, crates, a sign or string lights, and at the photo location you can sit on the edge of the load bed. That suits a wedding on a farm, in an orchard, in a barn or at an outdoor venue with a rural feel. Secure any decoration well while driving, or only put it out at the venue itself.
The pick-up also works well as a second car in the convoy, for example carrying the flowers or the cake, alongside another wedding car for the couple. Discuss with the rental company what is allowed in the load bed. If you would like to compare the twin, take a look at the Chevrolet 3100, and a Ford from the same era is the Ford F100. More cars from the United States can be found under American wedding cars.
