The first Dodge Challenger appeared in 1970, in the heyday of American muscle cars: big engines in affordable two-door coupés. That first generation stayed in production for only a few years. In 2008 Dodge brought the name back with a modern car that follows the design of the original almost to the letter: a long bonnet, a high, straight side profile, four round headlights set in a wide grille and a short rear end.
A well-known version is the R/T, with a Hemi V8 under the bonnet. As a wedding car it has a tough, confident presence. It is less elegant than a European sports car, but bigger, wider and a good deal louder. For couples who love American cars but don't want a classic car, it is a strong choice.
Step into the Challenger and you notice that the design is retro but the technology is not. There is air conditioning, modern seats, good brakes and an automatic or manual gearbox, depending on the version. That makes it suitable for a long day without worrying about overheating or an engine that won't start.
The Challenger is a coupé with two long doors. The front is spacious and getting in is fairly easy: the doors are wide and the seat is not extremely low. A bride with a full dress is therefore best seated in the front, with the skirt over her legs and the train in the footwell. There is room for two people in the back, although they have to climb in over the front seat, which is less convenient in a wedding suit or dress.
The car is long and wide. In an old town centre, a narrow village street or a car park, that needs some attention. Discuss the route and a good place to get out in advance. On an estate or at a venue outside the city there is usually plenty of room. The boot is generous for a coupé, so bags and shoes can come along.
A V8 with rear-wheel drive is powerful and calls for a gentle foot on a wet road. Ask the rental company about the conditions for whoever is driving, such as age, driving experience and deposit.
A Challenger suits a wedding with a tough or American feel: a party in a warehouse, a rockabilly theme, a waterside location or an industrial venue. The sound of the V8 as you leave is part of the moment, so plan your departure so that your guests are there to see it. For photos, a low camera angle from the front corner works well, as it shows off the wide front end to full effect.
Keep the decoration bold and simple: a ribbon across the bonnet or a sign on the back. If a two-door coupé is too small for your party, take a look at the Dodge Charger, its four-door sibling with the same technology. Other models from the brand can be found at Dodge wedding car hire, and you can find more cars from the United States at American wedding cars.
