The Ford Mustang was unveiled in the spring of 1964 and was an instant success. It was the first of the so-called pony cars: a sporty, affordable American car with a long bonnet and a short rear. Decades later, the Mustang is still in production and remains one of the most popular wedding cars. That is down to its shape, the sound of the V8 and the choice on offer: there is a Mustang for almost every taste.
As wedding cars, the classic Mustangs from the 1960s are the most popular, particularly those from the first generation. These cars are small for an American, with plenty of chrome, round headlights and the galloping horse in the grille. You will find them as a coupé, as a fastback with the sloping roofline and as a convertible. A few later classics are a little bigger and more muscular, such as the Mach 1 from the late 1960s.
The modern Mustang, which appeared in the mid-2010s, is also a sought-after wedding car, especially as a convertible or a GT with a V8. This generation was the first Mustang to be officially sold in Europe. The design clearly nods to the classic, but with air conditioning, an electric roof and modern technology.
A Mustang has two doors and a small back seat. The bride is therefore best seated in the front, with the skirt over her legs and the train in the footwell. Two witnesses can fit in the back for a short journey, but climbing over the front seat in a wedding dress is not very practical.
A Mustang convertible is a wonderful sight on a sunny day, with the two of you clearly visible in the car. On a classic, the roof is often operated by hand or is semi-electric, while on a modern convertible it goes down at the touch of a button. Agree in advance what happens if it rains, and think about your hair: with the roof down, it gets quite windy. A coupé or fastback is the safe choice in spring and autumn.
A Mustang from the 1960s usually has no air conditioning, and steering and braking take more effort. Many classics are automatic, which makes driving easier. Ask the rental company to explain how everything works and get to know the car beforehand. If you want peace of mind on a hot day or a long journey, a modern Mustang is the better choice.
Some of the classic Mustangs available for hire have a Shelby look, with stripes and a tough-looking nose. These are often cars built in that style rather than an original. If that matters to you, check with the rental company.
A Mustang suits almost any wedding: a classic town hall, a party in a barn, a beach venue or a city wedding. Choose the colour to match your theme: a white convertible for a light summer wedding, a dark fastback for a bold evening. Plan your departure so that your guests can hear the V8, and choose a spot for the photo shoot where the long bonnet shows up well.
Keep the decoration modest: a ribbon over the bonnet or a flower arrangement on the boot lid is enough. You can find more open-top cars at convertible wedding cars, and a modern rival with the same muscular shape is the Dodge Challenger. All models of the brand can be found on the page Hire a Ford as a wedding car.
