Nissan is a Japanese brand best known for dependable family cars, but it also has a long tradition of sporty models. The GT-R name was first used for the fastest versions of the Skyline, a model that gained cult status in Japan and among enthusiasts worldwide. Since 2007 the GT-R has been a model in its own right. The nickname enthusiasts give it, Godzilla, dates back to the Skyline era.
A GT-R as a wedding car is a choice for couples who love cars, engineering or Japanese culture. It stands out without following the classic image of an Italian supercar, and that makes it original. It suits a wedding with a modern, bold or urban feel. And if you are looking for a sports car that also starts reliably, has air conditioning and can handle a long drive, the GT-R is a very good fit.
Where many European sports cars are about styling and tradition, the GT-R is all about engineering. It has a twin-turbo V6, four-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox. That gives it plenty of grip, even on a wet road, which is no luxury on a wedding day in the Dutch climate. You can read more about the model on the page about the Nissan GT-R as a wedding car.
A GT-R has two doors and, unlike many sports cars, a small back seat as well. It is mainly suitable for short stretches or for bags and the bouquet. The couple sit in the front. The seating position is low, but less extreme than in a mid-engined car. With a full dress, it helps to sit down first and then swing your legs in.
As a modern car, the GT-R has air conditioning, heating and a good sound system. Long distances are no problem, and neither is a wedding in autumn or winter. The suspension is firmly set up, which you will notice on a poor road surface.
A GT-R has a lot of power and calls for driving experience. For self-drive, rental companies often set conditions on age, driving licence and deposit. Ask about these straight away when you request a quote, as well as about the arrangements for insurance and mileage.
Pay attention to the route and the venue. A sports car sits low, so high kerbs, steep driveways and unpaved tracks are not ideal. A modern venue, a hotel, a town square or an industrial-style reception hall with paved access suits it better than a muddy farmyard.
For photos, a GT-R makes a striking subject. The wide rear with its four round tail lights and the muscular profile look great against an urban backdrop, a car park or a sleek facade. If you would like to compare more options, you will find them under sporty wedding cars, including the Audi R8 and several Porsches.
Keep the decoration simple: a ribbon across the bonnet or a bow on the boot lid. On white or pearlescent paint, soft colours stand out nicely. Do not use tape, and ask the rental company what it allows. Keep decorations low and light too, because a loose bow on a sports car quickly catches the wind.
