Nijmegen has a history that goes back to the Romans, and you can see it all over the city. The Valkhofpark sits high above the Waal and is home to the Sint-Nicolaaskapel and the Barbarossaruïne, two of the oldest buildings in the country. From the park you look out over the river and the Waalbrug.
In the city centre you will find the Stevenskerk and the historic town hall, surrounded by little streets that slope down to the Waalkade. The quay itself is wide, right on the water and one of the best-known spots for photos in the city.
Nijmegen sits where the landscape changes quickly. On one side there is the broad Waal and the polder, on the other the wooded hills. That makes it easy to choose a route that suits you.
To the east of the city lies the Ooijpolder, an open river landscape with dikes, floodplains and small villages. A drive along the dike in a convertible or a classic car, with the water on one side and meadows on the other, is one of the most beautiful routes in the region. It is peaceful and the views stretch far into the distance.
To the south-east there are woods and hills towards Berg en Dal and Groesbeek. The roads here are winding and hilly, which gives a very different feel from the flat polder. This combination is what makes Nijmegen special: in half an hour you can drive from river to forest.
The city centre slopes steeply down to the Waal. A car with plenty of power and good brakes is a real advantage here. An American classic or an English limousine takes this kind of stretch smoothly, and suits the old buildings in the centre well.
For drives through the polder, convertibles are a natural choice. For the full overview, see the wedding cars in Gelderland. Ask the rental company where they can stop in the city centre, as the streets near the town hall are not all suitable for standing still for long.
Is your reception venue towards the Veluwe? Then also take a look at the wedding cars around Arnhem. Many rental companies drive in both cities. If your route takes you over the Waalbrug or De Oversteek, allow some extra time, because the bridges can be busy on Saturdays.
