Mercedes-Benz comes from Stuttgart and is regarded as one of the oldest car brands in the world. The name stands for reliability and craftsmanship, and the star on the bonnet is recognisable everywhere. As a wedding car, Mercedes-Benz has a big advantage: the brand has built so many different models that there is a suitable car for almost every wedding.
The W180, W113 and W123 are classics from the 1950s, 1960s and 1980s; the G63 is a modern off-roader. They share the brand, but are very different otherwise. Below you can read which Mercedes suits which kind of day. The main questions are: do you want to drive with the top down, do your witnesses need to come along, and will the route take you along paved roads or across the countryside?
Mercedes-Benz internally uses codes with a W and a number for each model series. Enthusiasts use these codes too, which is why the classics are named that way here.
The W113 is the SL from the 1960s, a two-seater with a fabric roof and often a removable hardtop as well. That hardtop has a slightly dipped roof, which reminded people of an Asian temple, hence the nickname Pagode. It is an elegant, sporty car for the couple alone. The W180 belongs to the family that earned the nickname Ponton, because of its smooth sides without separate wings. It is a six-cylinder car from the 1950s, with chrome, an upright grille and a stately seating position. Open versions exist too. See the Mercedes-Benz W180 as a wedding car.
The W123 was built from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s and is known as one of the most reliable cars ever made. In many countries it served as a taxi for years. As a wedding car it is roomy, with four doors and a wide back seat, and it has a calm, understated class. More on the page about the Mercedes-Benz W123 as a wedding car.
The G-Klasse has existed since the late 1970s and has remained almost entirely boxy. The G63 is the most powerful version, with plenty of luxury and a striking sound. See the Mercedes-Benz G63 as a wedding car. It is a modern car with air conditioning, but the step up is high, which calls for a helping hand if you are wearing a full dress.
The classics usually do not have air conditioning. On a warm day, open windows help or, in the Pagode, an open roof. Keep the route compact and allow some extra room in the schedule. The W123 and the G63 are the best choices for longer distances.
Choose based on the number of passengers: the Pagode is for two, the W180 and W123 have room for witnesses, and the G63 has four doors and a spacious back seat. With the Pagode and the open W180, the weather decides whether the roof can be down; agree beforehand who makes that call. A G63 is big and wide, which needs some attention in a narrow town centre or in a tight parking space.
Decorate the classics sparingly, with a ribbon along the star or a flower arrangement on the boot lid, and ask the rental company how the decoration may be attached. On the boxy G63, something bigger works well, such as a large bow on the bonnet.
