Spider is the name Alfa Romeo has given to its open sports cars since the 1950s. The brand comes from Milan and is known for cars built around the driver: a low seat, a long bonnet, a slim steering wheel and an engine you enjoy hearing. A Spider is therefore not a stately wedding car like a large English saloon, but a choice for a couple who want to drive together and love Italian design.
As wedding cars, the classic Spiders from the 1960s and 1970s are especially popular, from the era when Italian coachbuilders shaped the open Alfas. Think chrome bumpers, round dials and a slender nose. Such a car works well in photos because it is low and compact: you rise above the car, with the line of the bodywork beneath you.
The name has been used for a long time. The best-known Spider was built from the mid-1960s and stayed in production until the 1990s, after which more modern versions followed. So look carefully at the year of manufacture when comparing: a Spider from the 1960s drives and feels very different from one from the 1990s, which often has more comfort.
With a Spider, plan for two people and little luggage space. A sleek or softly flowing dress fits fine, but a full skirt or a long train will be a squeeze. With the roof down, getting in is easier: the bride sits down first and then swings her legs and the fabric inside. Rest the train on your lap or by your feet and put a clean cloth on the floor.
On a sunny day an open car is the best thing there is, but the weather cannot be planned. The fabric roof of a classic Spider will keep a shower out, although it is less quiet and snug than a modern roof. Agree with the rental company what happens if it rains, and think about your hair and veil: with the roof down it gets very windy.
A classic Spider has no air conditioning and no power steering, and the brakes and clutch need more effort than you are used to in a modern car. Ask the rental company to explain starting, changing gear and refuelling, and get to know the car beforehand. Do not plan long stretches of motorway: a classic Spider is at its best on country roads.
A Spider suits a small or informal wedding, a country wedding or a day when you drive together from the ceremony to the party without a procession. Plan a route along dykes or country roads with a photo stop on the way. If witnesses or parents need to come along, a second car is required. You will find more choice in open cars under convertibles as wedding cars, and if the driving matters most to you, you can also look at the other sporty wedding cars.
Decorate sparingly: a small flower arrangement on the bonnet or a ribbon is enough and suits the compact shape. Do not use tape or suction cups on old paintwork without checking with the rental company. Other cars from this brand can be found on the page with Alfa Romeo wedding cars.
