Ford is the American brand that used the assembly line to make the car affordable for everyone. Even so, when most couples think of a Ford as a wedding car, they don't picture a family saloon but the Mustang. It arrived in 1964, was an instant hit and even gave its name to a new kind of car: the pony car, an affordable sporty car with a long bonnet and a short rear end.
As a wedding car, Ford is therefore mainly the brand of classic American cars: 1960s Mustangs as a coupé, fastback and convertible, newer Mustangs and the Fairlane from the 1950s.
The Mustang and the Fairlane each tell a different part of the Ford story. The Fairlane shows the exuberant 1950s, the Mustang the sportier 1960s and beyond.
A classic 1960s Mustang comes in three forms. The coupé has a straight roofline and a separate boot, the fastback has a roof that slopes down to the rear in one line, and the convertible has a fabric hood. The sporty Shelby versions are well known too, as is the Mach 1 from the late 1960s. There is also the modern Mustang from the generation that was officially sold in Europe from 2015, with air conditioning and an electric hood. Read everything on the page about the Ford Mustang as a wedding car.
The Fairlane from the late 1950s is bigger and more exuberant than the Mustang. Think plenty of chrome, small fins at the back and often a two-tone paint finish. Inside there is a wide bench seat, so there is plenty of room for a large dress and a witness. More on the page about the Ford Fairlane as a wedding car.
A classic Mustang has a back seat, but only two doors. The bride then gets into the back by tipping the front seat forward, or the couple sit in the front and someone else drives. With a full dress, the front is often the easiest option. In a convertible with the hood down, getting in is simpler and the train can trail over the side.
Classic Mustangs often have a V8 and sometimes an automatic gearbox, which makes for relaxed driving. Air conditioning is usually not fitted. On a warm day, a convertible with the hood down is therefore more pleasant than a closed fastback. Modern Mustangs are more reliable over long distances and do have air conditioning.
Because Mustangs are so popular, it is wise to compare early: the choice of colour, body style and year of manufacture is widest if you start in good time. If you are looking for other classics with the same character, have a look at the American wedding cars, and for open-top models at the convertibles as wedding cars.
For decoration, the long bonnet of a Mustang is ideal for a bow or ribbon. On a fastback, a flower arrangement on the boot lid works well, and on a convertible, ribbons can be tied to the wing mirrors. Do not use tape on the paintwork, and check with the rental company what is allowed.
With a classic Ford, think about the colour too. Many 1960s Mustangs are white, red, black or light blue, sometimes with sporty stripes over the bonnet and roof. A white convertible with red upholstery gives a different look from a black fastback. So look at the photos in the listings and choose the car that suits the colours of your wedding.
