Peugeot is one of the oldest car brands in the world and comes from France, where the Peugeot family was already active in the metal industry before the car even existed. The lion logo has been on the bonnet for generations. Typical of the brand are model names with three digits and a zero in the middle, a system Peugeot has used for decades.
A Peugeot as a wedding car is a modest, stylish choice. Not a big American cruiser, not a British limousine, but an elegant French saloon that suits a wedding with a romantic or French feel. Think of a ceremony in a village church, a party in a garden or on a country estate, or a wedding with a vintage dress code.
The 404 came onto the market in the 1960s and was styled by the Italian design studio Pininfarina. You can see it in the clean, straight lines, the small fins at the back and the light, spacious cabin with plenty of glass. The car had a reputation for being solid and tough; in parts of Africa, 404s were still working as taxis decades later. You can read more about the model on the page about the Peugeot 404 as a wedding car.
The 404 is a four-door saloon with a wide back seat. That makes it easy for the bride to get in comfortably at the back, and there is room for a dress with volume. The suspension is soft, as in many French cars of that era, which gives a calm, gently swaying ride. On a cobbled street or a country lane, that is exactly what you want.
A car from the 1960s has no air conditioning and no power steering. The engine is simple and robust, but not fast. For a route through a village, along a river or over back roads, that is no problem at all. Long stretches of motorway suit the character of the car less well.
Plan a compact route with some scenic stretches and plenty of time between the ceremony, the photo location and the party. On a warm day, open windows and short journeys help; avoid waiting for long with the engine running. Ask the rental company when the car was last serviced and what happens if something goes wrong along the way.
A French classic works well with certain locations and themes. A vineyard, an orchard, an old farmhouse or a garden with lavender and long tables all fit nicely with the feel of the 404. A city wedding with photos by old façades or on a square also works well, because the car is not too big for narrow streets.
The paint colours of classic Peugeots are often calm: white, cream, grey or a soft blue. That leaves room for the flowers and the dress. A white ribbon on the bonnet and a small bouquet on the parcel shelf are enough. Ask the rental company how the decoration may be attached, because old paint and chrome are delicate.
If you would like to compare more cars with the same feel, you will find them among the classic wedding cars. The classic cars as wedding cars page also shows French, English and German classics side by side, so you can choose what best suits the style of your wedding.
