Getting married in the youngest province in the Netherlands

Flevoland was reclaimed from the water in the twentieth century, and you can see it everywhere: long straight roads, rows of poplars, broad dykes and water on almost every side. For a wedding, that makes a different backdrop from anywhere else in the Netherlands. In Almere and Lelystad, couples marry in modern town halls and celebrate by the water, for example around the Weerwater in Almere. Along the border lakes, the Markermeer and the IJsselmeer, you will find beach pavilions and marinas where you can celebrate with a view over the water.

Then there are the places with a story. Urk was once an island and still has an old centre with a harbour and a lighthouse. Schokland, also a former island, is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In the south you will find the Horsterwold near Zeewolde and the Oostvaardersplassen between Almere and Lelystad, green areas that show the polder is not just fields.

Long roads, wide horizons: which wedding car will you choose

The space in Flevoland means the car gets a lot of attention in photos, because there is so little around it. So think carefully about shape and colour. A long, gleaming cruiser or a brightly coloured convertible stands out straight away against the open polder.

American style on the polder road

The wide, straight roads of Flevoland seem made for a big American car. A Buick Roadmaster or Electra 225 glides calmly along the dyke and looks impressive against the empty horizon in photos; a classic Mustang or a modern Dodge Charger looks sportier. Open-top along the water

Along the border lakes and on the Houtribdijk between Lelystad and Enkhuizen the views are expansive, and a convertible suits that perfectly. Do bear in mind that it is often very windy on the polder, as there is little shelter.

Distances and rental companies in Flevoland

Flevoland is centrally located, so rental companies from Noord-Holland, Utrecht and Gelderland can easily drive there. Within the province, though, distances are bigger than you might think: from Almere to Urk or Emmeloord it is quickly three quarters of an hour or more. So allow plenty of margin when planning the journey between the ceremony, photo shoot and reception, especially with a classic car that takes things at a gentle pace.

The straight polder roads have an advantage too: few bends and little traffic, which is kind to an older car. If you are coming from the Randstad or have family nearby, you can also look at wedding cars in Noord-Holland, as many rental companies drive in both provinces. Agree where the car will set off from and where it can be parked during the dinner.
