Think of London and you picture the FX4: the tall, rounded taxi that drove around the English capital from the late 1950s until the 1990s. It was built for one thing, carrying people easily and comfortably. That makes it surprisingly well suited as a wedding car. The FX4 is instantly recognisable, has a friendly look and suits a wedding with an English twist, or a couple with a connection to London.
As a wedding car you will come across FX4s from different years, but the shape has barely changed over time: the high roof, the round headlights and the taxi light on the roof are always part of it. Black is the classic colour, but for weddings you will also see them in other colours.
A London taxi has a high roof so that passengers could once climb in wearing a hat. For a bride that is ideal: you hardly need to duck, and the floor in the back is flat. The passenger compartment is separated from the driver and has a wide back seat with fold-down seats opposite. There is therefore room for the couple and a few witnesses, with space to lay the dress out.
The rear doors of the FX4 are hinged at the back. This creates a wide opening that you can step through without turning, which makes a big difference with a long train. It also makes a lovely photo: the door open and the bride stepping out onto the pavement.
The FX4 was built for the city, not for the motorway. It drives at a relaxed pace, is not quiet and has no modern luxuries such as air conditioning. On the plus side, it has a remarkably tight turning circle, a requirement for London taxis. In narrow streets and in a small car park by the town hall, that is an advantage. Most FX4s are right-hand drive, as is only right in England.
The London taxi works best for a city wedding or a day with short distances: from home to the town hall, through the city centre to a photo location and then on to the party. Because several people fit in the back, the FX4 can also serve as a car for witnesses or parents alongside a second wedding car. A brick facade, a canal or an old cobbled street makes a lovely backdrop for this car.
You can decorate the bonnet or add ribbons at the front. The taxi light on the roof is a nice detail that you can show off.
