Rolls-Royce built the Silver Cloud from the mid 1950s to the mid 1960s, in three series. The first had a six-cylinder engine, the Silver Cloud II was given a V8, and the Silver Cloud III is recognisable by its double headlights at the front. All three have the long bonnet with the rectangular grille and the Spirit of Ecstasy mascot, and wings that run back in one flowing line.
As a wedding car, the Silver Cloud is a classic choice that suits a formal wedding. It looks stately without being showy, and suits a church, a castle or a historic town hall. Many couples choose it because it gives exactly the picture that belongs with a traditional wedding: the bride stepping out of a large, gleaming car.
The Silver Cloud II and III date from the 1960s and have the smooth V8. The Silver Cloud III, with its four headlights, is the final version and is seen by many as the most elegant.
The Silver Cloud is a roomy four-door saloon. In the back is a wide bench seat with plenty of legroom, ideal for the happy couple. The doors open wide and the seat sits at a comfortable height, so the bride can step out upright.
This is one of the best classic cars for a full dress. The skirt fits on the wide bench seat, and a long train sits well in the deep footwell at the back. A high hairstyle or veil has plenty of room under the roof.
The Silver Cloud drives smoothly and quietly for its age, but it remains a classic car without modern air conditioning. On a warm day the windows can be opened. It is large and heavy, so in a narrow town centre or a busy car park it is wise to arrange a fixed drop-off spot.
Because the Silver Cloud is long and wide, it is a good idea to check beforehand whether it can turn around on the venue's grounds and whether there is a paved spot to stop.
The entrance at the ceremony is the moment for this car. Have the Silver Cloud pull up at the entrance, with the rear door on the photographer's side. A tree-lined drive or a castle with a moat also makes a strong backdrop. A classic ribbon over the bonnet to the Spirit of Ecstasy and white flowers suit its style well.
Agree with the rental company how the arrival will go. A Rolls-Royce of this age calls for an unhurried entrance: the car stops, someone opens the rear door and the bride steps out while the guests watch. Run through that moment briefly with the photographer, so that they are standing in the right place.
If you would like to compare other models from the brand, you will find them at the Rolls-Royce wedding cars, including the later Silver Shadow II. The Silver Cloud had a twin at Bentley: the Bentley S1.
