The Fiat 500 most people picture was built from the late 1950s to the mid 1970s. It was the car that got Italy moving after the war: small, economical and simple, with an air-cooled twin-cylinder engine at the back. It is less than three metres long and looks friendly with its rounded shapes. As a wedding car it is the opposite of a large limousine, and that is exactly why couples choose it.
The classic 500s from the 1960s and 1970s are the most popular as wedding cars, with the open fabric roof that gives them a cheerful, Italian look on a sunny day. The modern Fiat 500 looks similar from the outside, but it is a very different car.
Most classic 500s have a fabric roof that you can roll back. This leaves plenty of room above the seats, which is handy for a veil or a tall hairstyle. With the roof open you ride almost in the open air, while the doors and sides stay in place.
Inside, the car is very small. A slim or softly flowing dress will fit, but a full skirt or a long train is really tight. Getting in is easiest with the roof open: sit down first, then swing your legs in, and lay the fabric on your lap or in the footwell.
A classic 500 has a small engine and was made for the town and the village, not for the motorway. Plan a route along country roads and allow extra time. There is no air conditioning and the heating is modest. Ask the rental company to explain how to start and change gear, because an old Fiat works differently from a modern car.
The Fiat 500 suits a small, relaxed wedding: a ceremony in a village, a party in a garden or orchard, or a couple with a love of Italy. Because of its size it fits almost anywhere, even a narrow alley or a small car park at the town hall. In photos it looks great next to an old wall, among fruit trees or beside a terrace. With the roof open you can stand up in it for a playful photo, if the rental company agrees.
Decorate with small touches: a little bouquet on the bonnet, ribbons or a sign on the back. Large flower arrangements quickly make the car look cluttered. A similar small classic with an open roof is the Citroën 2CV. Other models from the brand are on the Fiat wedding cars page, and you can find more cars of this age under classic cars as wedding cars.
