The Fairlane came onto the market in the mid-1950s as the more luxurious model in Ford's range. The name comes from Fair Lane, Henry Ford's estate in Michigan. By the late 1950s the Fairlane was a large American saloon with plenty of chrome, a wide grille, subtle tail fins and often a two-tone paint finish. It is exactly the picture many people have of an American car from that era.
As a wedding car, the Fairlanes from the second half of the 1950s are especially popular, often painted in two colours. It is a car with a cheerful, optimistic look that suits a wedding where the party takes centre stage.
American cars from this period often have a continuous bench seat at the front and back. In the rear, the bride has room to spread out her skirt, and a train fits on the floor. At the front, the couple can sit side by side if they wish. The doors are large, which makes getting in easier than in a small European classic, although it is still a low car and you will need to duck a little.
A Fairlane drives softly and quietly, with smooth suspension and a big engine. The brakes and steering need more effort than in a modern car, and the car is long and heavy. That suits a wedding day when nobody is in a hurry, but do allow plenty of time for parking and turning.
There is no modern air conditioning. On a warm day it can get hot inside, so park in the shade and keep journeys short. When it rains, a closed saloon is an advantage: you stay dry, and so does the dress.
The Fairlane suits a wedding with a 1950s or rockabilly theme, a party with a live band, a dinner in an old warehouse, or a couple with a love of American classics. But even at a more traditional wedding it stands out thanks to its colours and chrome. For photos, a side view works well, showing off the two paint colours and the long lines of the car. A dinner, a vintage-style petrol station or a row of trees all make lovely backdrops.
Decorate with ribbons or flowers in one of the paint colours, and keep it to a few accents: the chrome does the rest. Check with the rental company how you can attach anything. You can find other models from the brand on the Ford wedding cars page, including the sporty Ford Thunderbird from the same era. You can find more big classics from the United States under American wedding cars.
