Getting married in Zeeland: coast, dykes and old towns

Zeeland is the province of water, wind and light. Along the coast, from Domburg and Westkapelle to the Brouwersdam, you will find beach pavilions and dunes that are perfect for a summer wedding. Middelburg has a historic centre with the town hall on the Markt, Veere is a small harbour town with a large church, and Zierikzee has an old harbour and town gates. In Goes, the Grote Markt with its town hall makes a lovely backdrop.

The landscape is shaped by dykes, polders and the great water defence works. The Oosterscheldekering and the Zeelandbrug are well-known landmarks, and the roads over the dams offer sweeping views across the water. Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, on the other side of the Westerschelde, has a character of its own, with polders and small villages.

For many couples, Walcheren, with Middelburg, Veere and Domburg, is the heart of a Zeeland wedding. On Schouwen-Duiveland you will find Zierikzee and the dunes near Renesse, and on Zuid-Beveland there are Goes and the fruit orchards that blossom in spring. Each island has its own atmosphere, so plan your route around the places that appeal to you most.

A wedding car for the Zeeland coast and dykes

In Zeeland a lot revolves around the coast, but not every wedding takes place by the sea. In the old towns a different car suits than at a beach pavilion or a farm in the polder. Pay particular attention to three things: wind, sand and narrow streets.

Open-top along the water

A drive along the Zeeland coast or over the dykes is at its best with the roof down. A Ford Mustang convertible, a Porsche 356 Speedster or a Volkswagen Kever convertible suits the dunes and the light. Under convertibles as wedding cars you will find all the open-top models. Do bear in mind the wind, which can often be strong on the coast.

Rugged or cosy

For a beach wedding, a rugged pick-up such as the GMC 100 from the 1950s also works well, as does a Volkswagen camper van like the Volkswagen T2, which can take your witnesses along too. In Middelburg or Veere, a classic saloon or a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud sits nicely against the historic façades.

Practical matters: distances, tunnel and summer crowds

Zeeland looks small, but the distances across the islands and dams are considerable. From Zierikzee to Middelburg or Domburg you can easily be on the road for three quarters of an hour. If you need to get to Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, you drive through the Westerscheldetunnel, which adds extra travel time. Allow plenty of time for your route, especially with a classic car.

In summer the coast is busy, with lots of tourists and traffic on the access roads. It is best to plan a photo stop by the sea early or late in the day. At many beach pavilions the car is parked in a car park behind the dune, so agree with the pavilion where it can stop briefly to drop you off. Rental companies that drive in Zeeland are partly based in the province itself, but often come from Noord-Brabant or Zuid-Holland. Ask about the travel time to you and agree where the car will wait during the reception.
