Alfa Romeo comes from Milan and has spent well over a century building cars in which design and driving pleasure come first. You can see it in the long bonnet, the distinctive grille with its triangular shield and the proportions that Italian design studios mastered so well in the 1950s and 1960s. Choosing an Alfa Romeo as your wedding car means choosing a car with character, but without the grand gesture of a limousine. It suits a wedding that is stylish and relaxed at the same time.
As a wedding car, couples mostly go for the classic side of the brand, such as an open Spider from the 1960s. A car like this stands out without shouting, and it looks its best on a sunny day with a route along dykes, country estates or through a village centre.
Alfa Romeo has used the name Spider since the 1950s for its open two-seaters. They are compact, low cars with a fabric roof and an interior built around the driver: a thin steering wheel rim, round dials and very little frill. You can read more about this model on the page about the Alfa Romeo Spider as a wedding car.
A Spider is a true two-seater. That means room for the couple and nobody else. With a slim dress, getting in is no problem; with a lot of tulle or a long train, it takes some trial and error. A handy method is to sit down first with your legs outside the car, then turn together and fold the fabric into the footwell afterwards. A long train can rest on your lap or over the edge of the door, as long as someone checks it when the door is closed.
A classic from the 1960s drives differently from a modern car. There is no power steering, no air conditioning and the brakes need more pressure from your foot. For a short drive to the town hall and a photo shoot that makes little difference, but it is wise not to make the route too long and to build in a rest along the way. Classic Italian cars do not like standing still in a traffic jam with the engine running.
Start with the date and the distance. An open Italian sports car is often booked up early in the spring for the summer Saturdays, both by enthusiasts and by rental companies. When you request a quote, ask straight away how the car will get to you: rental companies often deliver across a large part of the country, but a classic car usually travels long distances on a trailer.
Think about the weather too. With the roof down, guests see you sitting there the moment you arrive, and that makes for lovely photos. In rain or strong wind the roof goes up and it becomes a lot more cramped inside. Agree who decides whether the roof is open or closed and at what moment, so that nobody has to hesitate on the day itself.
If the open character matters more to you than the brand, also take a look at other convertibles as a wedding car. If you are after more of a classic atmosphere, have a look at the classic cars for your wedding, including cars with more seats.
It is best to keep decoration on an Alfa Romeo small. A bow on the bonnet or a flower arrangement on a suction cup is enough; the lines of the car do the rest. Ask the rental company what is allowed, because the paintwork of a classic car is sensitive to tape and heavy magnets.
