The Citroën 2CV was built from the late 1940s until 1990 and is better known in the Netherlands as the Eend. It was designed as a simple, affordable car for the French countryside: light, economical, with a small air-cooled twin-cylinder engine and suspension that seemed to float over poor roads. That very simplicity makes the 2CV such a likeable wedding car. It is cheerful, instantly recognisable and a good fit for a wedding that is about atmosphere rather than status.
The shape stayed almost the same throughout those years. In the 1980s the well-known two-tone versions appeared, such as the Charleston. A late 2CV looks just like the first, but offers a little more comfort and is easier to maintain.
The entire roof of a 2CV is made of fabric and can be rolled back. This means it drives almost like a convertible, while the sides and doors stay in place. With the roof open, there is plenty of room above the seats for a veil or a tall updo.
The 2CV has four doors and high seats, so getting in is surprisingly easy. You do not have to sink down low as you would in a sports car. The seats are simple and springy, with a bench for two in the back. A full skirt does take up a lot of space in a car of this size: with a full dress, allow for the couple plus at most one extra person. The groom will need to duck a little to get in, but once inside there is more headroom than you might expect.
The 2CV is narrow and short, which is an advantage in an old town centre or a village with narrow streets. There is little luggage space, so let someone else carry bags and spare clothes in another car. The heating is modest and there is no air conditioning, but with the roof open there is always fresh air.
A 2CV is not a fast car. It does not feel at home on the motorway, but it does on country roads, dykes and through villages. Plan a route along small roads and allow some extra time. The gear lever sticks out of the dashboard and takes a little getting used to, so ask the rental company to explain it before you set off. That relaxed pace also gives you time to wave to people along the road.
The Eend suits a countryside wedding, in an orchard, on a farm or at a festival-style party outdoors. It works well in photos with the roof open, with you standing or sitting in the car. Decorate it with wildflowers, ribbons or a sign on the back. More cars from the brand, such as the Citroën DS 21, can be found on the Citroën wedding cars page. You can find other small classic cars with an open roof under classic wedding cars.
