In 1967 the T2 succeeded the first Volkswagen Transporter. It was built in Germany until the end of the 1970s and is recognisable by its large, curved one-piece windscreen, which earned it the nickname bay window in English. The T2 is bigger and more angular than the T1 and comes with a sliding door on the side as standard.
As a wedding bus, the T2 combines the charm of a classic VW bus with a little more practicality. It suits a relaxed wedding with a vintage or hippie feel, on the beach, in a garden, at a campsite or at a party barn. Guests of all ages know it, and it invites group photos.
The T2 was largely built in the 1970s. As wedding buses, they have often been restored in pastel colours with a white roof. These shades look lovely next to a white wedding dress and a colourful bouquet.
Depending on the layout, a T2 has room for around eight people. That makes it suitable for taking the couple together with the witnesses, the parents or the bridesmaids. This way you can travel with your loved ones to the ceremony or the party.
The sliding door gives a large opening. You step up a little, but you can get in standing upright. With a full skirt, it helps if someone passes the fabric in after you. Inside, the seats are wide and the headroom is generous, so a veil or an updo fits without any problem. A long train can lie on the floor or on a free seat.
The T2 has an air-cooled engine at the back and is not fast. On country roads it is a pleasure to drive, but on the motorway it is loud and sensitive to crosswinds. There is no air conditioning, but the windows can be opened. Plan your route with some extra time and preferably choose venues that are not too far apart.
The open sliding door makes an ideal frame for photos: the couple on the threshold, the witnesses in the bus. The T2 also works well as a backdrop outdoors, for example at a beach access, in the dunes or on a sandy track near a farm. A flower garland around the VW logo or along the top of the windscreen adds a festive touch.
A T2 is also a great way to transport the bridesmaids and witnesses while the couple travel in another wedding car. That way everyone arrives at the same time, and there is a cheerful bus next to the wedding car in the photo. If children are coming along, ask which seats have seat belts and whether a child seat fits.
Prefer the older bus with the split windscreen? Take a look at the Volkswagen T1. More buses for a larger party can be found at the wedding buses on the site, and you can find the full range of the brand at the Volkswagen wedding cars.
