Since 2016 the Boxster has carried the name 718, a reference to a Porsche race car from the 1950s. It is a two-seater with the engine in the middle, behind the seats, and a fabric roof that opens and closes electrically. This gives it a low, compact shape with a short nose and a broad rear.
As a wedding car, the 718 combines the look of a sports car with the convenience of a modern car. It has air conditioning, the roof closes in a few seconds and breakdowns are far less common than with a classic car. That makes it a good fit for couples who want to travel in an open car without the worries that come with a classic.
Besides the standard model, there are sportier versions of the 718, such as the GTS, with its own finish and a strong engine note. They look sleek and contemporary in photos, and suit a modern wedding venue or a stylish city celebration.
The big advantage of the 718 is that the weather has little effect on your planning. With the roof open you are fully on show, which is lovely for photos along the way and on arrival. If it starts to rain, the roof closes within seconds, even while you are driving at low speed.
Heat and traffic jams are also less of an issue than with a classic car. A warm July day with the roof closed and the air conditioning on is no problem, and a longer drive to a reception venue further away is perfectly doable. That makes it a good choice for a day with several locations: first the town hall, then a photo shoot out in nature and then dinner.
The 718 is low, with two doors and sports seats. A straight or semi-full dress fits well. With a full skirt, gather the fabric before you sit down, and with the roof open it is easier to get in because there is no roof edge in the way. There is no back seat behind the seats; a train is best placed in the footwell or over your lap.
Because of the mid-engine layout, the 718 has two small luggage compartments: one at the front and one at the back. Together that is enough for a bag with shoes and a spare jacket, but not for large items or gifts.
The Boxster is made for winding roads. A route through the woods of the Veluwe, along the Utrechtse Heuvelrug or over a dyke beside the water suits it well. For photos, a sleek modern backdrop works, or a green landscape that contrasts with the paintwork. Decorate sparingly, for example with a small corsage by the mirrors.
At the entrance, it works well to have the 718 arrive with the roof down, so that guests see the bridal couple sitting in it straight away.
