Gelderland is the largest province in the Netherlands and offers many different regions for a wedding day. The Veluwe is known for its woods, heathland and country estates, with Paleis Het Loo in Apeldoorn as the best-known example. On the edge of the Veluwe you will find Arnhem and castles such as Kasteel Doorwerth, and on the Zuiderzee side the old fortified towns of Elburg and Harderwijk. If you marry in the west, you will be near Ede, Barneveld and Scherpenzeel, with plenty of farms and countryside venues.
In the east lies the Achterhoek, with its coulisse landscape of small fields and tree-lined hedgerows, plus castles and country estates around Vorden and Zutphen. You can read more in our article on wedding car hire in the Achterhoek. In the south are the Betuwe and the Rivierenland, with dykes along the Waal and the Linge and orchards that blossom in spring. Nijmegen, the oldest city in the Netherlands, lies on the Waal and has a well-known bridge and quayside.
Because Gelderland has so many different regions, there is no single car that suits everywhere. Look at the setting for your day: a castle or country estate calls for something different from a farm barn in the Achterhoek or a party on the Waal. The rental companies that operate here have many classic cars in their range.
An English classic suits a castle or country estate on the Veluwe or in the Achterhoek very well. A Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud, a Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II or a Bentley MK VI glides calmly up a drive and has a spacious back seat. A Buick or a Peugeot 404 also makes for a classic arrival, each with its own character.
The dykes of the Betuwe and the banks of the IJssel are at their best with the roof down. A Porsche 356, an Alfa Romeo Spider or a Mercedes-Benz W113 Pagode is sporty and elegant. If you are bringing your witnesses along, choose a Mustang convertible or a Volkswagen bus. Under classic cars as wedding cars you will find all the classics in one place.
From the Achterhoek to the Veluwe, or from Nijmegen to Elburg, you are quickly an hour on the road. If the town hall and the reception venue are far apart, talk to the rental company about the route. A classic car is most comfortable on provincial roads at a steady pace, and on the Veluwe there are plenty of lovely woodland routes as an alternative to the motorway.
Because Gelderland is centrally located, rental companies drive in from all over the country, including from Utrecht, Overijssel and Noord-Brabant. Ask where the car departs from and what time it will arrive. On country estates, it is a good idea to agree with the venue in advance where the car may be parked, as not every drive is suitable for a low or heavy car.
