From the late 1950s, the Electra was Buick's largest and most expensive model. The number 225 in the name refers to the length of the car in inches, a little over five and a half metres. In America it was nicknamed the Deuce and a Quarter. As a wedding car, that is exactly the point: an Electra 225 is long, low and wide, with a straight side line that seems to go on forever in photos.
As wedding cars, the Electras from the 1960s are especially popular. By then American cars had become sleeker than in the 1950s: fewer rounded shapes and fins, more straight lines, though still with plenty of chrome on the grille and bumpers. The wide bench seats have room for at least five people.
A full-size American car from this era was built for comfort. There are wide bench seats at the front and rear, the suspension is soft and a big V8 keeps the car moving with the traffic without effort. For a bride, the back seat is ideal: there is room to spread out the skirt and a train fits on the floor. The long doors make getting in easier than in a small European classic.
The length has a downside too. In a narrow town centre or in a tight parking space, an Electra is hard to manoeuvre. So look at the route beforehand and agree on a spot where the car can stop to let you get in and out. The car looks its best on an estate with a wide driveway or at a reception venue outside the town.
A car from the 1960s calls for relaxed driving: the brakes are less powerful than on a modern car and the car is heavy. Air conditioning was an option in those days, so it cannot be taken for granted. Ask the rental company what the car has, and keep journeys short on warm days.
A big Buick suits a wedding with an American or retro theme, a party in a warehouse or barn, or a couple who love rock 'n' roll and 1960s music. But it also gives a classic wedding a grand entrance. Have it drive right up to the door, with the bride in the back, and take your time over photos that capture the full length of the car.
There is plenty of space for decoration: a ribbon across the long bonnet or flowers on the boot lid suit this car well. Check with the rental company how to attach anything without damaging the paintwork.
