Getting married in Limburg: Heuvelland, Maastricht and the Maas

South Limburg is the hilliest part of the Netherlands, and that gives a wedding here its own atmosphere. South Limburg is home to the Geuldal, Valkenburg with its castle ruins and the Heuvelland around Gulpen and Vaals, with half-timbered houses, castle farmsteads and views across the fields. Many wedding venues are old farmsteads or castles, and further north you will find Kasteel Hoensbroek, one of the best-known castles in the province.

Maastricht has a historic city centre with the Vrijthof, the Sint-Servaasbrug and the Onze Lieve Vrouweplein. Further north lie Roermond, the white town of Thorn and Venlo on the Maas, and North Limburg has a flatter landscape of woods and the Maasduinen. The province is long and narrow, so if you marry in the north and celebrate in the south, you have a fair drive ahead of you.

The Limburg landscape asks more of a car than the rest of the Netherlands. Hills, bends and narrow sunken lanes are no problem for a modern car, but a classic car drives more slowly here and sometimes needs a little more time.
