Amersfoort has one of the best preserved medieval city centres in the Netherlands. The Koppelpoort, a combined land and water gate, is its most famous sight. The Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren, known locally as the Lange Jan, rises above the city. And the Muurhuizen, built on the site of the first city wall, form an atmospheric ring around the old centre.
In the Middle Ages the city centre grew in two rings, and you can still see this today: the oldest streets lie inside the Muurhuizen, with the second ring, its canals and the Koppelpoort beyond. A walk from one ring to the other is a lovely moment for photos with your guests.
The town hall stands on the Stadhuisplein, on the edge of the city centre. From there it is a short walk to the canals and the old streets, ideal for your first photos together.
Amersfoort lies on the border between the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and the Gelderse Vallei. Within fifteen minutes you can drive from the medieval city to woodland or open countryside.
On the west side of the city lies the Amersfoortse Berg, a wooded hill. Beyond it begins the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, with country estates and tree-lined avenues. To the south, near Leusden, you will find the Den Treek-Henschoten estate, a large wooded area with avenues and ponds.
On the east side, Amersfoort gives way to the Gelderse Vallei, with meadows and farms. A drive through this landscape in a convertible or a classic car is relaxed and varied.
The city centre is largely pedestrianised, with narrow streets. A compact classic car fits in better here than a long American model. Agree a drop-off point on the edge of the centre with the rental company.
Amersfoort is centrally located and easy to reach via the A1 and the A28, so many rental companies drive here. Take a look at the overview of wedding cars in Utrecht for more choice. The classic cars suit the medieval city well, and for a stately entrance the luxury wedding cars are a good choice.
Are you getting married in Amersfoort but living in the city of Utrecht? Then also have a look at the wedding cars in Utrecht. Many rental companies drive in both cities. If you are driving along the A28 between the two cities, allow some extra time, as it can get busy on Saturdays.
