Why the Nissan Figaro is such a popular wedding car

There is currently no rental company on the site offering the Nissan Figaro. This small Japanese car came onto the market in the early nineties and was built for the Japanese market in a limited run. What makes it special is that it was new but looked old: round headlights, chrome details, a cream interior and a fabric roof that rolls back. Because it was built for Japan, the steering wheel is on the right.

As a wedding car, the Figaro suits a cheerful, romantic wedding. It is compact, looks soft and sweet in photos, and with the roof open you still get some shelter thanks to the fixed sides. At the same time, the technology is much more recent than that of a true classic car, which makes the journey relaxed.

If you are looking for the same small, round shape, take a look at the classic Fiat 500. It too often has a fabric roll-back roof and suits an Italian-inspired or relaxed wedding. The Citroën 2CV is a second option with a roll-back roof and plenty of character, although it is a little more basic inside.

If you would like to keep it British, the Mini Cooper is a classic with the same charm. With all of these small cars, keep an eye on space: a dress with a full skirt will be a tight fit, and there is room for little more than the couple and perhaps one small passenger. Why is the steering wheel of a Nissan Figaro on the right?

The Figaro was built for the Japanese market, where people drive on the left and the steering wheel is therefore on the right. All Figaros in Europe were imported as right-hand drive cars for this reason. For a wedding drive it makes little difference, although in the Netherlands the bride gets in on the pavement side, next to the driver.

Is a roll-back roof as nice as a true convertible?

A roll-back roof lets in plenty of light and air, while the sides of the car stay in place. This means the wind is less likely to blow your hair about, and the bride stays sheltered. The downside is that you can't lean out as far for a photo. On a cool or windy day, a roll-back roof is actually a pleasant compromise.
