The DAF: a piece of Dutch automotive history

DAF comes from Eindhoven and is the best-known Dutch manufacturer of passenger cars. The company, founded by the Van Doorne brothers, first built trailers and lorries, and brought out its first small passenger car in the late 1950s. The special part was under the floor: the Variomatic, an automatic drive system using belts instead of gears. This meant a DAF could be driven without changing gear, which made it popular at the time with people who wanted easy driving. In the 1970s the passenger car division passed to Volvo.

As a wedding car, a DAF has a charm of its own: modest, friendly and familiar to older guests. Do bear in mind that it is a small car with a gentle character. For a short drive through the village or to the town hall that is perfectly fine; for a long trip on the motorway, less so. A full dress with a train will be a tight fit, so a simpler dress or a second car for the witnesses is a practical idea.

A nice detail for the photos: many DAFs have recognisable round headlights and a simple dashboard, so a shot taken from the inside immediately feels nostalgic.

Small classics that are currently listed

At the moment there is no DAF wedding car on the site. If you are after the feel of a small, honest classic, take a look at:

• the Volvo Amazon, a Swedish classic from the brand that later took over the DAF passenger cars;
• the Citroën 2CV, simple, cheerful and with a roll-back roof;
• the Volkswagen Kever (the Beetle), perhaps the best-known small classic in Europe.

The selection changes, so a DAF may still appear later.
