Gent has one of the most beautiful historic centres in Belgium. The Graslei and the Korenlei, with their rows of guild houses along the Leie, are the city's best-known view. The Gravensteen, the Sint-Baafskathedraal and the Belfort are also within walking distance of each other. The town hall on the Botermarkt has a striking façade where Gothic and Renaissance styles meet.
Gent is a student city with a young, lively atmosphere, but also a city with a rich past as a medieval trading centre. That combination gives the city centre its own character: old façades with café terraces and cyclists in front of them.
From the Sint-Michielsbrug you can see the city's three towers in a row. Many couples choose this spot for their first photos together after the ceremony.
Gent is a city to explore on foot, and that goes for your wedding day too. The car mainly matters for arrival, departure and the drive to the reception.
Much of central Gent is car-free or has restricted access. A wedding car therefore can't simply go everywhere. Agree the route and a drop-off point with the rental company in advance, preferably on the edge of the centre. Walking the last stretch through the old streets is actually a lovely entrance in Gent.
The Citadelpark, on the south side of the city, is a large park with ponds and old trees. Outside the city lie the Leiestreek and the Meetjesland, with castles, country roads and river scenery. A drive in a convertible or a classic car along the Leie is a peaceful end to a busy morning in the city.
For the old city centre, compact classic cars suit better than long American cars. Also look at what is available in other Flemish cities, such as wedding cars around Brugge, or the full range in Oost-Vlaanderen.
If you are looking for something timeless that suits the medieval façades, take a look at the classic cars. Ask every rental company whether the car is allowed into the city centre and how waiting during the ceremony is arranged.
If you marry on a weekday, the centre is quieter and there is more room for photos. At weekends and during events in the city it is busier. Discuss with the photographer which places you will visit on foot and where the car will be waiting again.
