The Volvo PV544, known in the Netherlands as the Kattenrug

There is currently no Volvo PV544 among the cars on our site. The PV544 was built from the late 1950s to the mid-1960s and was the successor to the PV444. Its rounded, sloping roofline earned it the Dutch nickname Kattenrug ("cat's back"). It is a compact two-door car with a sturdy, Swedish character and a friendly shape that recalls the American cars of the 1940s.

As a wedding car, the PV544 stands out for its rarity and its rounded silhouette. It suits a vintage wedding, a ceremony in a village or a celebration in the countryside. Because it is a two-door, the bride gets in at the front or a seat is folded forward. With a full dress it takes a bit of trial and error, but it makes a lovely picture.

Rounded classics you can hire

Within the same brand, the Volvo Amazon is the most obvious alternative. It was partly built in the same period, also has rounded lines and is a little roomier, and the four-door version is easier for the bride.

If you are looking for a compact, rounded classic with the same friendly character, take a look at the Volkswagen Kever, which is also available as a convertible. You can find more cars from before the 1970s under classic cars. With a car of this age, ask how it will get to your venue and what the rental company does if it breaks down on the way.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the Volvo PV544 called the Kattenrug?
The nickname comes from the rounded, sloping line of the roof and rear, which is reminiscent of the arched back of a cat. In the Netherlands, the name Kattenrug is commonly used for both the PV444 and the PV544. Among enthusiasts it is a much-loved classic, precisely because of that recognisable shape.
Is a two-door classic car awkward with a wedding dress?
It takes a little more effort than a four-door car. The bride usually gets in at the front, where the door is wide. Getting into the back means folding a seat forward and ducking down, which is awkward with a full dress. Practise getting in beforehand, or choose a four-door classic car if the dress takes up a lot of space.
Which classic car suits a countryside wedding?
Small, rounded classics such as an old Volvo, a Beetle or a 2CV suit a rural wedding well. They cope easily with narrow roads and look right at home among meadows and farms. A classic pick-up or Volkswagen camper van also fits that atmosphere.
How far can a classic car of over sixty years old travel on your wedding day?
A well-maintained classic car can easily handle an ordinary wedding journey, but long distances at high speed are demanding. Plan the route in short stretches and, preferably, along minor roads. Discuss the distances with the rental company: some will bring the car on a trailer to the area near your venue.
