The Bentley S1 as a wedding car: stately and rare

The Bentley S1 is not currently offered by any rental company on the site. Still, it is easy to understand why you are looking for one. The S1 is the large Bentley of the second half of the 1950s, with a long bonnet, sweeping front wings and an interior of wood and leather. It is a car that effortlessly sets the tone at a castle or country estate.

What many people do not know: the S1 shares its bodywork with the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud of the same period. The visible difference lies mainly in the grille and the badge. The Bentley has a more rounded radiator and therefore looks slightly less formal. For a wedding couple, that means the same spacious back seat, four doors and a calm, dignified ride. Do bear in mind that it is a car of around seventy years old: there is no air conditioning, and on warm days a short route is wiser than a long drive around.

Similar British luxury that is online now

The most obvious alternative is the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud, the twin of the S1 with the famous upright Rolls-Royce grille. If you would rather stay with the Bentley marque, you will find an older model in the Bentley MK VI, a saloon from the early 1950s with even more classic lines.

If you would like to look more widely, see all the English wedding cars. There you will also find simpler British classics, for a wedding that is a little less formal. The selection changes, so it is worth checking back later to see whether an S1 has been added.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a Bentley S1 and a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud?
Technically and in terms of bodywork they are very similar: both date from the second half of the 1950s and share the same basis. The difference is mainly visible at the front. The Rolls-Royce has the tall, upright grille with the figurine on the bonnet, while the Bentley has a more rounded grille with the winged B emblem. In wedding photos, the Bentley looks slightly sportier.
Is there enough room for the train in a large Bentley?
A Bentley from the 1950s is a sizeable saloon with a wide back seat and four doors. For most dresses that is more than enough, even with a train that you lay across your lap. Let the bride get in first and her partner on the other side. A rental company can usually also put down a blanket or cover to protect the dress.
Can a car from the 1950s cope with a hot summer's day?
These cars were built for long journeys, but they have no air conditioning and the engine heats up in stationary traffic. When it is hot, plan a short route, avoid traffic jams and agree with the rental company where the car can wait in the shade. Put a bottle of water in the car: the leather interior gets very warm in the sun.
Which wedding venues suit a 1950s Bentley?
An S1 or a similar British luxury car works best at a venue with a sense of occasion: a castle, a country estate with a long driveway or a stately town hall. A long driveway is ideal for your arrival and for photos of the car in motion. At a modern or industrial venue, a car like this feels less at home.
