An Excalibur looks like a car from the 1920s, but it isn't. The brand was founded in the United States in the mid-1960s and built new cars in the style of the great Mercedes sports cars of the late 1920s. Think of an extremely long bonnet, freestanding wings, chrome exhaust pipes running along the side and spare wheels on show. Beneath that classic shape sits American engineering, which makes the car easier to drive than a genuine pre-war model.
The open Phaeton has two rows of seats and a soft top; the roadster is a two-seater. As a wedding car, an Excalibur suits a Great Gatsby-themed wedding, a castle or an estate with a long drive. Do allow for a high step in and little shelter when the roof is down.
Precisely because an Excalibur stands out so much, it is also a rewarding subject for the photographer. The long bonnet, the chrome exhausts and the freestanding headlamps look best from the side or at a slight angle from the front. So plan a moment when the car is parked in an open spot, such as a drive or a courtyard, and let the photographer walk around it at their leisure.
