The Citroën DS as a wedding car: elegant and unconventional

No rental company on the site currently offers a Citroën DS 21. That is a shame, because few classic cars have such a distinctive look. The DS launched in 1955 and looked as if it had arrived from the future: long, low and streamlined, with a shape that earned it the nickname "snoek" (pike) in the Netherlands. The DS 21 is one of the more powerful versions from the second half of the 1960s.

Its best-known feature is the hydropneumatic suspension. When you start the car, it slowly rises, and on the road it almost floats over bumps. For a bride it makes for a comfortable ride, and arriving at your venue has a touch of theatre. The back seat is roomy and the four doors make getting in easy, even in a full dress. Do expect classic technology without air conditioning, and choose a rental company that knows the DS's special engineering well.

Classic cars with French or European flair that are online

From the same brand, the Citroën 2CV is a playful alternative: simpler and smaller, with a roll-back roof and just as French. For a smart French saloon from the same era, you could look at the Peugeot 404.

If you are mainly after an elegant European classic, there are more options among the classic wedding cars. These include German, British and Italian cars from the same period. The selection changes regularly, and as soon as a DS 21 is added, you will see it on this page.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the Citroën DS known as the snoek in the Netherlands?
It's down to the shape: the long, flat nose and streamlined body are reminiscent of a pike, which is what snoek means in Dutch. The nickname has become so well established in the Netherlands that many people know the car mainly by that name. On wedding photos the shape is instantly recognisable, especially from the side or at a slight angle from the front, where the long line shows to its best advantage.
What will you notice as a passenger of the hydropneumatic suspension?
The suspension makes the ride smooth and calm: you feel speed bumps and potholes far less than in other classic cars. When the car starts up, it first rises, and after parking it slowly settles back down. That last moment is a lovely opportunity for a photo or video. For a bride in a long dress, the calm ride is a big advantage.
Is a French classic like the DS suitable for a long route?
The DS was built as a comfortable touring car and can handle a long drive. Even so, it is a car more than half a century old with no air conditioning. On a warm day, keep the route short and plan breaks around the photo shoot. A rental company that drives the car regularly will be able to judge what is sensible.
Why isn't the Citroën DS 21 listed online?
On Trouwautohurenonline.nl, rental companies list their own cars, and at the moment nobody has offered a DS 21. Other French and European classic cars are available. As new cars are added regularly, it is worth checking back later.
